Student's Mental Health: Guidance & Counselling at Killeen ISD

Maintaining mental wellness and health through the busy schedule of student life is highly important as it is directly correlated to social-emotional learning in children. Managing stress and maintaining good mental health can also help students focus on their academics and earn better grades. Killeen ISD offers professional guidance and counseling to help students cope with stress at school or in their personal life. The school district provides varied resources to promote mental health awareness among students.

The KISD counseling program has been set up to empower students and prepare them for the future by developing academic, career, personal, and social competencies. The guidance counselors can be contacted at 902 N 10th St Killeen, TX – 76541. Under this program, the counseling team collaborate with other schools, parents, and community representatives to develop a wide support system for students.

The guidance and counseling program at Killeen ISD is based on the belief that all students are worthy and have the right, as well as the need, to develop knowledge, abilities, skills, and positive attitude to improve behavior and academic achievement. Killeen ISD also believes that the social environment including parents, school, and community have a noticeable impact on the mental health of the students. Thus, the school district aims at creating a positive environment via professional guidance and counseling where students can nourish their academic abilities and grow as individuals. KISD is listed as the 4th most diverse school district in Texas and the program is built to encompass a wide diversity of students.

In addition to the Guidance and Counseling program at Killeen ISD, students have access to different mental health management resources which may help students in developing important skills required for self-regulation, conflict management, and stress coping strategies. These intrapersonal and interpersonal skills may not only help students navigate through their school life but may also help them manage stress in their personal life.

As a part of mental health awareness and management, students in grades 5-12 are offered activities that educate them on how to create an SI (self-injure) emergency kit, things they can do instead of hurting themselves, understanding their own feelings, etc. The mindfulness & movement activities for elementary kids include yoga for kids ages 3-10, meditation, outer-space yoga stories, etc. Secondary students at Killeen ISD are offered activities such as yoga for beginners, hot air balloon relaxation, stress awareness, sunrise breath, waterfall breath, and song breath.

In addition to mindfulness activities, Killeen ISD offers multiple resources for stress management and mental health management to students. Students have access to resources such as videos and slides for visual relaxation, calming breathe bubbles, relaxing sounds, animal cams, and brain breaks.
