Killeen ISD Special Olympics

The Killeen Independent School District is committed to providing excellent academic and athletic opportunities to students. In partnership with Special Olympics Texas, Killeen ISD is paving way for achieving greater inclusion for children with intellectual disabilities. This is attained by imparting sports training and conducting athletic competitions for Killeen ISD students with intellectual disability and/or a closely related disability with functional limitations in both general learning and adaptive skills adaptive skills. The age limits for actively enrolled Killeen ISD students to participate in Special Olympics is 8 years to 21 years.

All participating students are required to submit a medical form along with all other requirements as per Special Olympics Texas (SOTX).

Special Olympics at Killeen ISD

To increase overall life experience for children with intellectual disabilities, Killeen ISD provide special sports training and athletic competition in a variety of sports. Such activities may help in in building social skills, cognitive growth, and assists with emotional & physical health. 

At Killeen ISD, Special Olympics Dream Team Track and Field Season started on January 31st, 2022. A Killeen ISD’s Special Olympics Area Track Meet was held on March 26th, 10 am at Leo Buckley Stadium and March 29th, 5:15 PM-7 PM at Harker Heights High School Track

About Special Olympics Texas (SOTX)

Special Olympics Texas’s mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The aim of the activities is to allow them to maintain physical fitness, show courage, experience joy, and share gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

Training For Special Olympics

  • All participating athletes must train for a minimum of eight weeks prior to each competition. 
  • Athletes are trained by volunteer coaches, who are required to first complete a certification program and attend seasonal training schools. 
  • Competition officials and event directors are also required to attend training schools.

Becoming A Volunteer At Special Olympics

  • Volunteering candidate must be at least 16 years of age, unless accompanied by an adult.
  • No previous experience is required.
  • Volunteers are required to participate in an orientation prior to working with our athletes
