Financial Aid For Students

There are different types of financial aid that students of Killeen Independent School District can take advantage of. Financial aid may be granted on the basis of one’s financial needs or academic performance.

What is federal student aid? This is the funds that the federal government grants for assistance with college and graduate school related expenses.

The Process: The process starts with contacting the financial aid office at the institution you are interested in applying for and completing a financial aid application form. It is important to submit your application form before the deadline in order to stand a good chance of getting the package.

Eligibility Requirements: The basic eligibility requirements for financial aid are:

  • U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • Show financial need
  • Enrollment in an eligible degree/certificate program
  • Half-time enrollment requirement for most programs
  • Satisfactory academic progress

Forms of Financial Aid:

  1. FAFSA: Completing the FAFSA is a free and quick process that makes a U.S. citizen eligible for financial aid in the form of work study programs, loans, and grants. Some colleges also offer scholarships on the basis of FAFSA submissions. Note that FAFSA opened on October 1st, 2021 and it may be in your best interest to apply as early as possible as some schools and states have limited funds. Consider filing out the form electronically on the myStudentAid app.
  2. TAFSA: Foreign students and non-citizens can receive state financial aid on the basis of TAFSA if they are classified as residents of Texas for tuition purposes. The deadline for TAFSA is January 15th, 2022.
  3. Opt-Out-Form: A student who does not complete the FAFSA or TAFSA can fill an opt-out form by completing a signed Opt-Out form and submitting it to the school counselor. Financial Aid Application Opt-Out Form does not restrict a student from submitting a financial aid application at any time in the future.

FSA ID: Generating an FSA ID is an important process before filling the form as it helps in preventing processing delays. If you are a parent of a dependant student and your information is mentioned on your child’s FAFSA form, you will also be required to have an FSA ID for him/her to sign the application. Parents who do not have a Social Security Number may not be able to create an FSA ID and may be required to print a signature page.

Documents Required: You may need documents to prove your date of birth, address, financial situation and more. These include your Social Security Number, your parents Social Security numbers (for dependent students), driver’s license number, Alien Registration number (for Non U.S. citizens), federal tax information, untaxed income records and information on additional income.

Important Points: The FAFSA form is for a single academic year only and has to be resubmitted each year after updating the necessary information.
