Role Of School Counselors

School counselors have multiple roles to play. While they primarily focus on the academic success and mental & psychological health of students, their duties are customized according to the level of students they work with.

Some of the basic roles of a school counselor are:

  • Academic Guidance: The primary role of a student counselor is to offer academic guidance to students. A student counselor helps students understand their needs and any difficulties they may be facing. The counselor can also help students learn to work with learning disabilities.
  • Career Guidance: School counselors guide students to understand opportunities for their future career. They help students understand their interests and advise them on subsequent career options. They also help students choose the courses and other programs that aligns best with their interests.
  • Manage Student Issues: Students sometimes go through personal and school issues. This includes learning blocks, bullying, problems at home, etc. Guidance counselors may help students manage these issues by recommending a course of action that can encourage personal growth and problem management.
  • Handling Psychosocial Problems: Students may encounter psychological problems like fear of failure, inferiority complex, negativity, etc. Counselors help in identifying problematic behavior and discovering the root cause behind such behavior. They may help students in dealing with psychological issues by assisting in proper counseling and trying to find suitable solutions.
  • Bridge Between Teachers & Parents: Counselors work with parents and teachers to identify the problems that a student is facing. They also suggest practical ways to tackle these issues.
