How Can Teenagers Maximize Their Educational Experience?

Teenage is the phase of life where children develop academic skills, social skills, and polish their personalities. Thus, supporting a teenager through the process of education is a unique responsibility for everyone involved i.e. teachers and parents. However, adults must understand that teenagers require an uninhibited environment to thrive in and succeed academically.

Ways in which teenagers can wade through this transitional phase of their life while improving their academic performance are:
  • Identify A Learning Style That Works: Everyone has a unique style of learning that works for him and helps in gaining a deeper understanding of a subject. Teenagers can significantly boost their academic performance by identifying a learning style that works for them i.e. using visual aids, audio recordings, reading or engaging in hands-on projects, etc.
  • Flagging Information: It is easier to find important information when preparing for exams by marking important points and topics with the help of highlighters, colored pens, bookmarks, and post-its. This technique has a profound impact on motivating a student to study, as it is easier to get to an important page or topic without wasting time.
  • Plan: Planning is a process that is crucial for success in almost every field of life. Teenage years are ideal to develop this skill and witness its positive impact on academic performance. Apart from providing structure to school work, planning also instills a sense of accountability in a student.
  • A Dedicated Place To Study: Every student has a specific study environment in which he performs to the highest levels. Some like a quiet and secluded place while others do not mind some noise/sound around. However, in all cases, it is important to ensure that sources of distraction like social media and cell phones are off-limits. The study area should have plenty of light, fresh air, and right temperature. Also, there should be a comfortable study table and chair to help with maintaining the correct posture.
  • Open Communication: Parents and teachers need to establish an open line of communication with teenagers. This will help in gaining an insight into whether they need expert assistance of a tutor or a professional to help with a learning disorder, low self-esteem, substance abuse, etc.
