Why Art Should Be Included In Elementary Education

Historically, art included painting, sculpture, music, architecture, poetry and performing arts such as theatre and dance. However, today fine arts also include film making, photography, design, conceptual art, video production, editing, calligraphy, sculpture, etc. in its ambit.

Teaching arts in elementary school can provide a myriad of benefits to the young and malleable minds of kids. Some benefits are listed below:
  • Better Student Engagement: Art encourages students to present authentic performance in whatever they do by being completely engaged in the task at hand. It fosters collaboration and provides immediate rewards in the form of appreciation to their performance or creation.
  • Positive Habits And Attitudes: Including fine arts in elementary schools has been shown to foster a positive environment and culture in schools. The need for disciplinary action greatly reduces as students develop traits like patience, persistence and confidence.
  • Enhanced Creativity: Art students are more flexible and adaptable than their peers. It is observed that students who receive art education in elementary school are relatively better at creativity assessments.
  • Foster Higher Levels Of Thinking: Art helps in sharpening critical intellectual skills of students which helps in achieving better results in other academic subjects as well. It teaches students to observe, analyze, view different perspectives and interpret the world around them.
  • Foster Mathematical Thinking: Measurement, proportional thinking and number manipulation are an intrinsic part of art. Activities like dance and music help kids in learning patterns. Visual art patterns teach them spatial & geometric relationships whereas activities like making clay models teaches them three dimensional skills.
  • Motor Skills: When younger kids are introduced to art forms such as playing an instrument, drawing, coloring, dancing and more, the activities involved in the act develop their fine motor skills. For example, when a child holds a paintbrush or scribbles with a crayon, uses safety scissor etc., he develops both gross motor skills (movements related to large muscles like arms and legs) and fine motor skills (movements related to smaller muscle groups).
  • Teamwork: Art work such as a theatrical production, collaborative artistic endeavor, group performance, etc. teaches students to work in a team for achieving a common goal. Kids understand how teamwork contributes towards great performance. They learn to live and work with others, articulate intentions and also receive & give criticism gracefully within the safe and peaceful confines of their schools.
