Benefits Of Peer Learning

Peer learning is a method of learning in which a student who is an expert on a subject explains the concepts to another student who is a novice at it. This method of imparting knowledge is used in tandem with the efforts of a teacher. So peer learning does not do away with a teacher’s role but it augments it instead.

Peer learning can be in the form of discussion groups, buddy systems, homework groups, pair and share activities, collaborative project work etc. Here is a list of some major benefits of peer learning:
  • Active Learning: Peer learning is a form of active learning as it promotes communication in the form of questions and discussions. The student is not expected to be a passive listener.
  • Reinforcement Of The Peer Teachers Learning: In addition to benefiting the learner, peer learning also helps the peer teacher to reinforce study material. Also, teaching another student improves one’s own concepts.
  • Comfort And Openness: Students feel more comfortable and open with students of their age as compared to teachers. The relationship of a student and teacher tends to be a formal one and a student can shy away from asking an important question or concept. However, with a peer, communication comes naturally.
  • Greater Understanding: It is interesting to note that students who learn from peers tend to retain information better. A peer being at the same mental level of a student can explain things at the pace of the student leading to a better understanding of the subject.
  • Financially Viable: Peer learning is also financially beneficial as the school doesn’t have to employ extra staff for students who need more time. Students who are experts at a subject can do this task as well.
  • A Sense Of Service Is Instilled:  Being of help to someone in need of it is one of the most gratifying experiences in life. It has the potential to raise the helper’s self-esteem.
  • Increased Productivity Of Teachers: Teachers in schools that promote peer learning have shown to be more efficient and effective at their work. They are more focused and productive on the task/lesson at hand knowing that a weak student is in good hands.
  • Better Employability: Peer learning does wonders for the student who helps. Such students are more confident, inculcate better inter-personal, leadership as well as social skills. These skills are crucial when it comes to looking for a job later in life. A contender for a job with such skills has greater chances of being employed than others.
