Imparting Physical Education In Schools

Incorporating physical education in the school curriculum has shown to have a positive impact on various spheres of a student’s life. It improves academic performance, reduces stress, improves eating habits and regulates impulsive behavior. Some modern day schools are incorporating physical activities in the form of “gym classes” wherein students are taught psychomotor activities and involved in various sports. Effective habits such as these can be immensely helpful in keeping chronic diseases and disabilities out of the lives of your children.

Here are some reasons due to which imparting physical education in schools is becoming the need of the hour:

  • Better Health
Incorporating physical education in schools can positively impact a student’s health. Increasing the amount of physical activity in schools prevent issues such as obesity, sleep disorders, osteoporosis, asthma, cardiovascular problems, diabetes etc. Adopting an active lifestyle in school sets the foundation for a healthy lifestyle as adults. Workplace wellness as an adult is associated with fewer costs and higher productivity. So, physical education is a stepping stone towards an economically sound life as an adult.
  • Improved Concentration Levels
Students who engage in physical activities for a mere 30 minutes every day at school have shown to have better concentration levels. This positively impacts their academic performance. Kids who are engaged in physical activities at school score better in their academic tests as compared to their less active counterparts.

  • Social Confidence
Physical education teaches students important skills regarding working as a team, leadership skills, volunteering, community engagement and altruism. Group physical activities lead to positive character development in students. As a result they have positive social interactions. A fun and relaxed environment makes them more confident at voicing their opinions in a group.

  • Good Mental Health
Physical activities boost mental health. When a child engages in physical activity for an extended period of time, his/her brain produces feel good chemicals (endorphins) which help in regulating mood, pleasure and pain. Students who are physically active at school sleep better, are more focused at what they do, have a stronger immune system and are less prone to mental issues such as irritability, anxiety and depression.
  • “A Go Getter” Attitude
Physical education makes kids look at obstacles as things that can be overcome. Problems don’t intimidate them even as adults. Instead they become more resilient and patient. Students develop a mind-set of looking at obstacles as challenges that can be strategically handled.
