How Can Schools Incorporate Nutrition Education In The Curriculum?
- Nutrition education should start in primary school. Kids should be educated about healthy and unhealthy foods in the food group through charts or other visual images.
- Kids in middle school should be taught how to read food labels. Impart lessons on healthy and unhealthy fats. Teach them about healthy portion sizes. Encourage them to avoid sugary food by highlighting the effect excessive sugar can have on our bodies.
- Senior students need to delve deeper into the realm of food and emotions. They should be taught about the link between the mind and body when it comes to making food choices. It is important to educate them about the negative effects of following fad diets, the interconnection of sleep and diet choices and importance of eating for energy and vitality. Connect with senior students by teaching about nutrition on the lines of good skin, peer acceptance etc.
- Nutrition education is not just limited to classrooms. Students need to understand the basics of how and where the food they consume, comes from. They should create school kitchen gardens with herbs and veggies of their choice. Alternatives to this can be vertical gardens and growing micro greens in their classrooms. In addition to making students aware about how food grows, these activities are therapeutic too.
- It is important for schools to practice what they teach. A culture of healthy foods should be incorporated within the school boundaries. Healthy food should be offered in the school cafeterias. Posters on healthy food can be pasted in the cafeterias and junk food should not be offered in the school canteens.
