Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)

Advancement Via Individual Determination refers to research-based strategies and curriculum to assist the development of critical thinking, literacy, and math skills among students in elementary, secondary and higher education. AVID was established 35 years ago to train educators to adopt methodologies required for skill development of students. AVID’s mission is to provide an equal opportunity to prepare students for success in pursuing college degrees or careers. The program focuses on providing additional support to mid-performing students at the risk of under-achievement to improve their chances of academic success.

Benefits of AVID Program:

  • AVID may help students attain academic success by teaching skills and behaviors aimed at the same. It creates a positive environment for students and provides intensive support via tutorials. AVID promotes self-motivation among students to believe in themselves and work hard to achieve their academic goals.
  • Middle and high school AVID students receive an elective class (AVID) under the supervision of a trained AVID teacher. The class engages students in pre-Advanced Placement, Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses.
  • AVID tutors play an important role in developing the academic and personal strength of students. The tutor uses AVID strategies such as writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading.
  • AVID students are prepared for post-secondary education and taught how to refine their soft skills. Instead of repeating and memorizing, students are encouraged to reflect and question what they learn. They are taught how to solve problems together by working in a team. The AVID curriculum is a student-centric one that aims to create content mastery.
  • Selection of students into the AVID program is based on STAAR scores, attendance, course enrollment, behavior, and special needs. The skills developed under AVID program help in making students better at overcoming challenges and improving their chances of success.
  • AVID students engage in activities that encourage gaining knowledge through peer tutoring, collaborative study groups, Socratic seminars, and philosophical chairs. These activities promote communication and team building. They also participate in motivational activities and AVID field trips.
  • AVID teachers play a vital role in increasing the self-esteem of students. The teachers pay special attention to treat students of diverse cultures, languages and backgrounds equally and make them feel like one among the rest. They encourage students to challenge their core beliefs and think outside the box.
