KISD 4 STEM

STEM refers to a curriculum that imparts education via an interdisciplinary approach that focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEM works by integrating the four disciplines instead of teaching them separately. It helps students learn how to indulge in computational thinking while solving problems.

Listed below are some interesting facts about KISD 4 STEM:

Application: Students interested in applying for STEM can do so at any of the KISD campuses. The applications are to be filled out and returned to a counsellor in the school’s guidance center. Links for high school and middle school applications are available on KISD’s website. 

Middle School STEM: The middle school STEM curriculum is focused on helping students envision and plan for their future academic and career goals. The technology enriched program assists students in developing analytical, inventive and critical thinking skills. 

High School STEM: The high school STEM curriculum aims to generate interest among students through project-based learning opportunities. It helps students to gain knowledge that may assist them in college STEM courses or STEM workplaces. The STEM program at KISD supports HB5 philosophy that provides ample choice and flexibility to students.

Benefits: KISD STEM provides opportunities to earn post-secondary credits prior to high school graduation.  It also provides benefits like better course offerings, opportunities for high level coursework, field trips, project based learning, technology integration, community health awareness and activities, etc. 

Pathways: 

  • The Science program consists of associate degrees like Human Biology, Biology Organismal, Chemistry and Environmental Science. 
  • Technology subjects comprise of Computer Science fundamentals, Web Design, Digital Art and Animation and more.
  • Engineering studies includes Calculus I and II, Principles of engineering, Dual Credit Physics, etc.
  • Mathematics comprises of Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Calculus I and II and more.

Subjects and schedules of classes vary in different grades. 

STEM on Wheels: in 2018, KISD received a 5 year $1 million grant for “ STEM in Motion'' from the Department of Defence Education Activity. The mobile STEM lab has been set up in a 38-foot-long vehicle with flexible furniture and modern equipment like a 60-inch smart TV, iPads, laptops and other technology and science equipment. The lab includes a full-time teacher, assistant and driver. It has been scheduled to visit different elementary schools in the district. The lab is also a part of district events and special campus activities. 

Other STEM Activities: Other activities that are a part of the STEM at Killeen Independent School District include civic involvement (e.g. pond water examination, composting, etc.), a Career Center, participation in World Fairs, Cancer Research Outreach, STEM Tiny House Design, Eclipse viewing, etc.
