Role of Music in Student’s Development

Music is a fun activity that may aid in student development. Getting involved in school’s music programs can have a positive impact on every aspect of a student’s life. Music involvement can improve a student’s self-discipline, dexterity, coordination, self-esteem, thinking skills, listening skills, creative abilities, and personal expression.

Music can have positive role in the following:

  • Developing Language & Reasoning: Music involvement can help to develop the left side of brain which is associated with language & reasoning. Also, learning and rehearsing songs at a young age may help in imprinting information on young minds. They can also learn new words and pronunciation which can improve their command over language.
  • Improving Memory: To properly perform an act of music, students constantly need to use their memory. Memorization is required by both musicians performing with sheet music and vocalists. This may help in training the mind of students to improve their memory, which can help the academic growth of students immensely.
  • Personal Growth: Music is an art and it promotes craftsmanship. Participating in music activities can encourage students to create good piece of art and improve their performance by continuously developing their skills. Students learn to analyze their own performance and improve their skills. This act of self-analysis and improvement can translate into the personal and academic lives of students leading to personal growth.
  • Increased Coordination: Hand and eye coordination is an integral part of playing any instrument as students are required to look at the instructions written in sheet music and simultaneously play their respective instrument. This may help in developing motor skills and coordination skills among students.
  • Sense of Achievement: Learning to play a new instrument or mastering a new vocal note can be a challenging yet achievable goal. When students set such goals and succeed with practice, they may develop a habit of perseverance and sense of achievement. This can lead to self-confidence and improved self-image in students.
  • Emotional Development: Music is a great medium to express and channel emotions in a positive way. Thus, students who participate in music activities can be more emotionally developed. They may be more empathetic and become better at coping with anxiety.
