Importance Of STEM Education

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM education addresses the concern that these subjects are often taught individually, when they are actually intertwined and correlated. A STEM based curriculum uses real life situations to help students understand how educational concepts relate to life. It encourages students to experiment and learn from their own experiences to reach positive outcomes.

When considering STEM education, a major question that arises is “What is the importance of STEM education?” To answer that question, we have compiled a few benefits of STEM education:

  • Fosters Ingenuity & Creativity: Ingenuity is defined as the quality of being original and inventive. Ingenuity and creativity, when paired with STEM education, can lead to development of new ideas and innovation. Popular example of ingenuity & creativity being coupled with STEM is the development of Artificial Intelligence.
  • Develop Resilience: STEM education is based on the foundation that failure is an effective and important learning exercise which teaches students to embrace and learn from their mistakes. When pursuing STEM education activities, students will learn in a safe environment which encourages them to try again after every failed attempt. This can lead to the development of confidence and resilience among students as they learn that failure is a part of learning process.
  • Encourages Experimentation: Experimentation is an integral part of STEM education as it may persuade students to experiment and test their ideas, without the fear of failing. STEM education reiterates the fact that experimenting and testing every idea will help in leaning the shortcomings of the idea ultimately leading to the development of a successful innovation.
  • Knowledge Application: In order to succeed in life, students need to be capable of applying their knowledge to real life scenarios. STEM education emphasizes on applying the knowledge acquired from learning sessions to practical real-life situations. This can motivate the students to learn because they understand that the skills they acquire can be put to use in their life. Students can learn to implement their skills for problem-solving in their real life.
