Motivation: The Key To Student Success

Motivation is a key ingredient for success in all spheres of life i.e. academic, social and physical. It helps in overcoming the fear of failure, encourages one to take challenges, learn new skills, improves emotional quotient, reduces the desire for constant attention, etc. Schools can contribute towards motivating students by offering them a supportive curriculum comprising of projects, techniques, and tools that increase their overall level of interest.

Let us take a look at different ways with which parents and teachers can contribute towards motivating students:
  • Accept Mistakes: It is important to make students feel appreciated in spite of mistakes made while learning. Mistakes are a part of life and a foundation for life’s crucial lessons. When a student knows that he will be accepted by teachers, peers, siblings, and parents in spite of mistakes, it gives him a much-needed confidence boost.
  • Offer Stimulating Content: To keep students engaged and interested in learning, it is necessary to keep the educational content interesting, challenging and stimulating. This should be done as per the intellectual level of a student to prevent feelings of intimidation and keep him motivated.
  • Relatable Content: For a student to develop an intrinsic desire to learn and stay motivated, the content being taught should be such that he can relate to it in real life. For some students, it is important for a concept to make sense before learning it.
  • Manage Emotions: Emotional problems can get in the way of a student’s desire to learn and affect his academic performance. Parents and teachers should work in collaboration with one another to help students suffering from emotional issues such as depression, anxiety, fear, and other psychological issues.
  • Less Control: Students feel de-motivated to perform at school when they are pressurized to get good grades and outperform their peers. Adults in a student’s life should work towards supporting his academic endeavors without putting any sort of pressure on them.
  • Give Attention: Parents and teachers should be careful to give students the right amount of attention in order to make them feel acknowledged and wanted. Focusing on academic performance without giving due importance to the amount of attention a student gets can be counter-productive in most cases so care should be taken to balance both facets.
  • Other Measures: Some measures that parents can take to keep their children motivated during the school years are to provide a warm home environment, be role-models for success, create a connection between schoolwork and a child’s interests, reinforce positive behavior and emphasize on a child’s progress instead of comparing him with others.
