Stress Management Techniques For Students

In today’s competitive world, students experience continuous stress. Common causes why students are building stress include homework, school, bonding with peers, transitions, work, etc. As children grow, it is important to teach them ways to cope with stress without letting it affect their health and studies.

Below are some of the important techniques for stress management in students:
  • Proper Sleep: Getting enough sleep is essential for relief from stress. Students should aim for at least 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. In addition to this, they should take power naps from time to time. Sufficient sleep refreshes the brain & body, increases productivity levels and boosts academic success.
  • Exercise: Regular exercise is a great way of reducing stress levels in students. Exercise boosts feel-good hormones in the body which makes it easier for students to face challenging situations. The best forms of stress-reducing exercises for students are yoga, walking, cycling and even light gym.
  • Breathing: An effective way of instantly calming down stressed brain is to practice breathing exercises. Breathing exercises include deep breathing, breath focus, progressive muscle relaxation, etc.
  • Music: In addition to being a great stress reliever; music provides a ton of cognitive benefits. Students can use music to feel calmer and inspired. Also, music wards off depression, eases muscle tension, slows down breathing, regulates heart rate, induces a positive state of mind, lowers blood pressure and more.
  • Organized Surroundings: Clutter can be a cause of stress for some students as it overwhelms and reduces productivity. It can be helpful for students to keep their study spaces clutter-free, distraction-free and minimalist for boosting productivity, mental clarity and significantly reducing stress levels.
  • Healthy Diet: Improving a student’s diet can make a huge difference in reducing stress levels. The best way to establish healthy eating habits is to encourage eating at home. A diet rich in omega-3, vitamin E, calcium, proteins, fiber, etc. is ideal for students.
  • Meditation: Meditation has been proven to offer many health benefits. It increases self-awareness, promotes emotional stability and relieves stress by helping to focus on the present.
  • Extracurricular Activities: Engaging students in extracurricular activities, provides a refreshing change from regular routine, promotes socializing and helps in managing stress.
