Importance Of Balancing Study & Hobbies In Student Life

School life involves juggling numerous aspects such as studies, sports, socializing, community service, hobbies and various interests. Studies consume major part of a student’s time, leaving little time for other activities. However, for the overall development of a student, it is important to strike a balance between academics, personal interests and hobbies.

Some important reasons for students to balance their studies and hobbies are:
  • Well-Being: Engaging in hobbies in between studies helps students maintain an overall sense of well-being. It reduces fatigue caused by studying for long hours by lowering eye-strain, offering change of posture, changing breathing patterns etc.
  • Social Life: Taking out time for hobbies adds an element of interest to a student’s life as he has something to learn and polish his skills. Students, who pursue hobbies, diligently attract like-minded people and maintain a healthy social circle.
  • Good Pass-Time: Pursuing a hobby offers numerous benefits for a student as compared to spending free time by using devices like televisions, video games and smart phones.
  • Academic Performance: Balancing school life and time for hobbies improves academic performance of students. Children perform better academically as their brains get recharged and their levels of stress & anxiety significantly reduce.
  • Better Relationships: Students who strike a balance between school and hobbies tend to enjoy better relationships with friends and family members. They are happier, relaxed and easier to interact with at school, home and amongst friends.
  • Higher Self-Esteem: Hobbies make students feel confident in their abilities and this reflects in the form of high self-esteem. They develop a sense of accomplishment on completing tasks involved in a hobby and see their hobbies as something that makes them stand apart from the rest.
  • Problem Solving Skills: Students develop valuable problem solving skills over time. Hobbies help them in being patient while handling failure to do something in first attempt, try various solutions to accomplish a task, find suitable way to do things in the best way possible and produce a successful output.
  • Concentration: Hobbies help students develop concentration and keep their minds from wandering. They can focus on the task at hand and be consistent in what they do. Higher concentration levels reflect in better cognitive abilities, sharper memory and satisfactory performance at school.
