Benefits Of Joining Student Council

Student councils are a platform for students to experience multifaceted growth through development of various important qualities such as leadership and problem-solving skills. These skills eventually translate into life skills, enabling students to take on a wide variety of situations with confidence. No wonder most schools have student councils as an integral part of their extracurricular activities.

One of the most prominent benefit of joining a student council is that it helps in boosting confidence. It is one of the few opportunities that allows young students to make important decisions and solve problems on their own. By being an active member of a student council and repeatedly being involved in these processes, it starts to come naturally to students, and they feel confident to act proactively outside the student council as well. In addition to developing these important skills, students also gain confidence from the recognition that they receive from their peers and elders when they are elected into leadership roles.

Perhaps the most evident benefit of joining a student council is the improvement of communication skills. No matter what your role is in a student council, you will be presented with multiple opportunities to develop both your written as well as oral communication skills. This is a great asset to have, since communication skills determine your success at every step in life. Student councils involve a great amount of discussions and negotiations, all of which contribute to the enhancement of communication skills among their members.

In addition to communication skills, being a student council member also presents students with numerous chances of networking. You have to get out of your comfort zone and reach out to a wide range of people in order to be successful as a member of a student council. These networking skills are invaluable when you finally step into the professional world.

Student councils also teach students how to receive personal feedback. There would be several times in every student council member’s experience where they will be met with criticism, disagreement and even failure. Learning how to deal with these emotions and emerging with self-confidence, proves to be an incredible life-skill. In addition to receiving personal feedback, students also face situations where they do not agree with their peers and have to express their opinion with grace and empathy. This is also a skill that gets developed as a student council member.

Looking at the numerous benefits of being a member of a student council, it becomes evident why these are gaining so much popularity in schools that are committed to excellence.
